Achievement First, a non-profit 501(c)3 charter school management organization, will operate 29 public charter schools in Brooklyn, Connecticut and Rhode Island for the 2014-15 school year. Achievement First currently educates more than 8,100 students in historically underserved and underserved neighborhoods, with over 90% of our students identifying as Black and Latino. Achievement First seeks a Vice President, School Operations who will lead AF’s school operations teams across 3 states, 5 cities and 29 campuses. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a senior leader committed to building and sustaining the infrastructure of a fast-growing network of achievement gap closing schools. The Vice Present, School Operations will oversee and enhance AF’s existing practices, ensuring that AF realizes world class operations and achieves scale efficiently and without compromise to our mission. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President, School Operations will oversee a team of 80-plus operations staff across our campuses primarily through a team of Regional Directors of Operations.  The VP, School Operations will collaborate regularly with Achievement First’s Regional Superintendents and the organization’s most senior central office staff members—-particularly in the areas of Human Capital, Finance, Facilities, Systems & Technology, External Affairs and Recruiting.  The position is located in Brooklyn, New York or New Haven, Connecticut and requires travel between the regions ~1 day a week.


Team Management & Talent Leadership

  • At the network level, establish and maintain high standards for team performance by developing clear long-term strategic plans and annual goals and rigorously tracking performance against them

  • At the school level, attract, hire, develop, evaluate and motivate a dispersed community of committed and driven operations professionals, who execute at high levels of excellence and deeply share AF’s mission.

  • Actively manage a portfolio of Regional Directors of Operations and other operational staff members, serving as their on-call resource, thought-partner, problem solver and coach

  • Ensure that all of our campus school operation’s teams operate in a way that is consistent with AF’s culture and mission and always puts our schools and their students first

School Operations

  • Actively partner with Achievement First’s Facilities team to ensure that all AF campuses are not only safe, secure, clean, cost effective and fully operational at all times but also have a bright and inviting educational atmosphere which communicate excellence and professionalism, and inspire learning and achievement
Student Data Management
  • In close partnership with AF’s Systems & Technology team, provide oversight and support to the school-based operations teams around effective data management; ensure that strong practices are in place for the collection, accuracy and reporting of all student data
Student Enrollment, External Affairs & Compliance
  • In partnership with AF’s External Relations team and our District partners, ensure that all AF campuses are consistently fully enrolled and in compliance with all local, state, federal requirements
Student Services
  • Food Services: Ensure campus level student food service maximizes instructional time, is in compliance with the National School Lunch Program, and maximizes state & federal reimbursements

  • Transportation: Ensure that campus level daily transportation is safe, seamless and maximizes instructional time; proactively troubleshoot problems with AF’s external service providers as needed

  • School Safety: Ensure that all campuses conduct requisite fire and bus drills as required by law and maintain a legally compliant and actionable School Safety/Emergency Plan

Budget & Finance

  • In partnership with Achievement First’s Finance team, ensure that the budget for all schools is managed effectively and is mission aligned; actively partners with Finance team on the annual budgeting process

  • Ensure that all schools adhere to Achievement First’s fiscal policies and procedures, and maintains accurate records of all financial transactions

Human Capital

  • In close collaboration with AF’s Human Capital team, ensure that campus based Directors of School Operations are sufficiently well trained to serve as the first line of support to their principals and staff members on all matters pertaining to Achievement First’s personnel policies, benefits offering, certification requirements, staff renewals, performance issues and proper maintenance of HR records

New School Start-Up

  • Oversee AF’s Director of School Operations-in-Residence (DIR) program, a 6 month program designed to provide a robust onboarding and development process for new Directors of School Operations

  • Play a critical role on AF’s greenlighting committee which governs new school openings; seeks to memorialize AF’s ad-hoc start-up practices into more formal project plans and documented toolkits



Required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience include:

  • At least seven years of relevant multi-site operational experience with demonstrated success in either an education, non-profit, and/or for-profit setting

  • Track record of recruiting, developing & managing talented staff and talent pipelines across lines of diversity

  • Expert collaborator, relationship builder, cross-functional thinker, communicator, influencer and negotiator

  • Record of success of managing to outcomes indirectly through multiple layers and without formal authority

  • Strong executor, strategic thinker and forward planner with an ability to engage at the detail level as needed

  • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and “roll-up-the-sleeves” attitude

  • Belief in the Achievement First mission and educational model

  • Some weekend/evening work will be required; as will regular travel between New Haven, CT and Brooklyn, NY
